Reliability Growth Through Robust Design and Test

Course Description

This three-day course provides a complete overview of the reliability growth process associated with robust design and test techniques. It defines the basic concepts of reliability growth and illustrates how these concepts can be most effectively applied using a variety of design and test methods. Topics covered include reliability growth management, reliability growth through design (FMEA/FMECA, FTA, Reliability Physics/Physics of Failure, Accelerated Life Testing, and Orthogonal Defect Classification for Software) and reliability growth through test (FRACAS; reliability planning, tracking and projection models). The course also provides unique and innovative approaches that measure, quantify and improve the effectiveness of Design for Reliability (DFR) activities.

Who Should Take the Course

Reliability Engineers, Design Engineers, System Engineers, Managers and other individuals responsible for developing or managing products/systems that require high reliability, reduced warranty exposure, managed life cycle costs and increased customer satisfaction will benefit from this course.

What the Student Will Learn

This course will familiarize the student with the essential methods and techniques necessary to achieve reliability growth through all phases of product/system development. Historically, the reliability growth process has been treated as a reactive approach to growing reliability based upon failures “discovered” during testing or, most unfortunately, after a product/system has been delivered to the customer. The problem with this approach is that it ignores opportunities to proactively grow reliability during the design process, when failure mitigation is less expensive, less likely to disrupt schedule and the impact on the customer can be minimized. This course explores the activities and opportunities that can be leveraged to promote and achieve reliability growth throughout the entire system/product life cycle.

Included Materials

Attendees will receive a copy of the RIAC publication “Achieving System Reliability Growth Through Robust Design and Test”, a $100 value.

Required Materials

Attendees are requested to bring a scientific calculator to participate in class exercises.

Presenter(s) Biography

RichWisniewski

Mr. Wisniewski is a Senior Reliability Engineer at Quanterion Solutions and has more than 30 years’ experience in applying reliability, maintainability and safety engineering design, analysis, testing and screening methods and failure analysis and field support techniques on a variety of commercial products and military equipment/systems. Programs include radar, microwave/RF sensor systems, flight controls, mission computers, fixed and rotary winged full authority digital engine controls, regenerative liquid propellant guns, lightweight howitzers, and commercial and military hybrid electric vehicle drive train components. At Quanterion, he leads efforts to support government and industry customers in designing reliability/quality into products and systems, solve product reliability problems and identify corrective actions using techniques such as electrical stress analyses, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, Root Cause Analysis, standard statistical analysis, and the collection, analysis and modeling of failure data.
