Biography: Robert B. Abernethy, PhD

"Dr. Bob," as he's internationally known, is the undisputed leading guru in the field of Weibull Analysis, as well as the greatest advocate of its use. He is also known worldwide for his expertise in jet engine performance and measurement uncertainty analysis. He has been widely recognized for his contributions to these fields with awards from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), the American Society for Quality (ASQ), and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) as well as others.

He has taught Weibull Analysis to more than eight thousand students in countries including Australia, Canada, China, Japan, Germany, Sweden, Israel, and The Netherlands, in additional to the US. "The New Weibull Handbook," the fourth edition of his series of practical "must-have" reliability treatments of the subject brings his readership to more than 30,000 practicing engineers, scientists, and managers. He holds patents for a number of contributions to aircraft engine design.

Dr. Bob graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) as a Navy scholar with a BSME and in 1958 received his MS in Industrial Management. He served on destroyers during the Korean War and joined Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in 1955. He was the Fulbright Scholar for science and math to Great Britain where he obtained his Diploma of Imperial College (DIC) and PhD degrees in statistics from the Imperial College of Science in 1965. He retired from Pratt & Whitney Aircraft after 32 years as Manager of Reliability, Safety, Maintainability, and Statistical analysis to teach Weibull analysis. Dr. Bob resides in Florida with his wife Sally. His hobbies are orchids, staghorn ferns, fishing and traveling. Sally and Dr. Bob have four children and seven grandchildren.
