Abstract
High-performance military and civilian systems operating in the aerospace environment require propagation media characterization to meet reliability and accuracy goals. The atmosphere, ionosphere, and the space environment constitute the media within which waves propagate. The users of communication, navigation and surveillance systems must have continuous background information regarding the state of these media as well as their variability and their response to natural disturbances. Ideally, such information is available through sophisticated forecasting techniques based on media models and supported by periodic (or real-time) updating of data at specified locations. Modelling, and consequently forecasting, can and must be improved significantly through a better understanding of the governing processes of all the interrelated parts of the space environment.
