As system complexity increases, and as linearquadratic optimal control is used in more demanding situations, the extension ofthe design methodology to cover system failures, robustness and reliability isof crucial importance. This paper documents the progress toward a theory whichincorporates reliability in the performance index; a linear quadratic controlproblem is formulated which accounts for system effectiveness and gives anoffline procedure for comparing two linear quadratic control systems on thebasis of both reliability and performance.
