The objective of this research is how to achieve in engineeringpractice the potential advantages of reliability that a large scale datacommunication network should make possible. From a technical viewpoint, theprincipal areas of investigation reported here are computer resource sharing,adaptive network routing, and the efficient representation of network protocolinformation. The approach has been theoretical, with an attempt made to take afundamental new look (independent of current engineering practice) at areaswhere theoretical understanding is limited, but important and possible toattain. The primary analytical tools have been information, control, andqueueing theory. (Author)
