Abstract
Weibull statistics were used to investigate the effects of bothsurface exposure time (SET) and bond exposure time (BET) to high moisture uponthe shear bond strengths of metal joints. The surface chemistry and relatedsurface energy of both metal adherends and adhesives were analyzed prior tobonding. The theory of interfacial adhesion and thermodynamics of fracture werecombined to predict the effects of both SET and BET on long term bond strengthand reliability. Structural adhesive joints of both aluminum and titaniumstructural alloys bonded with epoxy-phenolic adhesive were shown to degradeaccording to surface energetics predictions. Aging is shown to lower averagestrengths without broadening the Weibull strength distributions. (Author, modified).
