REPORT ON THE LMSC SPACECRAFT MATERIALS RELIABILITY PROGRAM,
Matthews,C. O. ;Finch,W. L. ;
Investigations concerning the effects of the space environment on thereliability of engineering materials are reported. An environmental model wasestablished, vehicle requirements surveyed, material development and testingconducted in specialized facilities, and specifications and handbook dataprepared. This integrated program has been concerned with threee primary areasencompassing materials for thermal control, mechanisms, and electricalfunctions. A variety of materials are discussed, including surface coatings,lubricants, sliding electrical contacts, adhesives, seals, electronics componentmaterials, antennas, solar cells, and infrared detectors. Both laboratory andon-orbit testing are in progress in support of space systems programs. (Author,modified).
